Construction “around the clock” moves ahead of schedule.
Pennsylvania Governor Josh Shapiro announced that a temporary six-lane roadway will reopen this weekend where the section of Interstate 95 collapsed two weeks ago.
A major bridge of the highway outside Philadelphia collapsed after a gas tanker truck exploded underneath it on June 11. The U.S. Department of Transportation released emergency funding to help quickly rebuild the highway, which President Biden called the most “‘important project to the country right now.”
Governor Shapiro expressed gratitude for the “tremendous progress” the construction crews made in the last two weeks. “We have worked around the clock to get this done, and we’ve completed each phase safely and ahead of schedule,” the governor stated. “That’s all due to the incredible coordination with our local, state, and federal partners — and thanks to the hard-working men and women of the Philadelphia Building Trades who are making this happen.”
NASCAR’s Pocono Raceway contributed to the success of the emergency rebuild. As the region experienced rain that could have posed a setback, they brought the racetrack’s jet dryer to dry the road and complete the project.
